Sweet Fix

So many of you know that I prefer savory over sweet. I would pass by a seven layer chocolate cake for chips and dip any day of the week. Now I am not saying that I’m a desert hater…I just don’t get those must-have-sugar-now cravings very often. Unfortunately for me, one of the few places that have generated those feelings is located just around the corner from where I live, Gelato Messina. If a short walk away seems deadly, Peter was close to picking an apartment directly over the Darlinghurst location. I shudder to think what would have happened if we’d moved in.

Studying abroad in Italy I had my fair share of amazing gelato. It has been 10 years since I lived in Florence and honestly I can’t remember anything tasting better than Messina. I know it’s a bold statement to make. However, my friend Allie who recently moved from Rome, agrees that our local Sydney spot is off the charts. For those of you purists…you will just have to visit and try and prove me wrong.

With flavours like Poached Fig in Marsala, Salted Caramel and White Chocolate and Gianduia Bianca I keep coming back for more. The problem, once I try something so delicious, it is difficult to order something new. All of their 40 flavors are made completely from scratch. Apple pie gelato has home made apple pie in it! In addition to the gelato they also feature the most adorable cakes filled with their specialty flavours. With a line around the block nearly every night of the week, it is easy to see why Gelato Messina continues to set the bar for ice cream in Australia.
